Even with the tightest internal controls, nearly every business is subject to fraud risk today. Surveys by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners indicate that U.S. businesses lose 5% of their annual revenues to fraud. The risk for fraud increases as organizations rely more on information technology and generate more complex transactions. Further, a weak economy and pressure to contain costs add additional stress and risk. With so many risk factors, it can be difficult to detect and correct fraud.

Occupational fraud schemes frequently continue for years before they are detected, typically lasting two years from the beginning until the time it is caught. Fraud can have far-reaching impacts eroding cash flow, increasing legal costs, and ruining an organization’s reputation. Learn how fraud occurs and what can be done to prevent it.

The first hour of this two-part seminar will address how to detect and prevent fraud. Bill Douglas of Cost Advisors, Inc. will discuss the prevalence of occupational fraud and how to prevent it. In the second hour, Katherine Heekin of the Heekin Law Firm will address legal issues in employee fraud that arise once it has been detected. She will address investigation issues, employee discipline and termination, and methods available to recoup losses.
